i'm sure most of you are familiar with Catfish: the TV Show (now in its second season), or maybe Catfish the documentary that inspired the show, or maybe you remember what happened to that Notre Dame football player last year.
if you don't know ANY of these things...then you may want to read this post. don't be a victim of catfishing. yes..."catfish" is no longer a noun to describe the fish with whiskers...it is now a noun that describes someone who pretends to be someone they're not online in pursuit of an online romance. it can also be used as a verb. "I thought Framel was really Marq, but it turned out he was catfishing me" or "Damnit! I got catfished!"
(sidenote: framel and marq were really names used on a previous episode)
and I want to provide with you ways to tell your online love is a Catfish...
1. you're in love with someone you've never met.
2. you only have 3 pictures of your online love they are either bathroom selfies. usually sans a shirt.
3. your online love always cancels plans to meet face-to-face.
4. if your fiance' is someone you've only communicated via online and/or text.
5. your online love says they are a model and/or rapper.
6. you don't know how to use google.
7. you email Nev and Max to help.
if you've reached the point where you're having to email Nev and Max to help you figure out if you're being catfished 10 times out of 10, your story will not end well.
it doesn't take that much to google someone, because all Nev and Max do is type in a name and 2 seconds later they find out that Marq is actually Joshua and the guy pretending to be Marq is really Framel. Yes, this is real.
I google people I've actually met in real life. I need to know everything about that person before we get deep into dating. otherwise, later down the road I find out they have a criminal record (yes, really happened to me).
whenever a new episode starts, I know there will not be a happy ending for either party involved. so the minute they meet the person who needs help (with learing how to use google images) my reaction is usually the same. bless.
so my favorite thing to do now is just try and guess what the Catfish actually looks like.
y'all should play along too. the best is to follow along via twitter while watching an episode. I laugh the hardest when I'm following along fellow viewers' commentary on the twitter machine.
so far...there has only been one happy ending.
here is the happy couple.

kya thought she was in love with alyx, a male. alyx turned out to be dani, a transgendered girl working towards being a male.
good for them. they found love online and I don't even have a boy that wants to speak to me in person.
my only successful online encounters have been with bloggers. so, if your online love is a blogger you probably won't run the risk of being catfished.
you're welcome.
